New cell phone plan can make cross-border living easier and more affordable

On Sunday, May 3, Verizon Wireless launched its new "Nationwide Plus Mexico" program designed for those who frequent both sides of the US/Mexico border. This is a particularly useful program for frequent visitors and residents in the northern Baja California region (Tijuana-Rosarito-Ensenada).

The crux of the value of the program is that users will get a US phone number that works either in the US or Mexico with no roaming or long distance charges within or between those countries (depending on the plan offered).

One important caveat that makes this program a little less flexible than the "North America Choice Plan" that Verizon discontinued two years ago. The new program no longer includes calls to or within Canada and the average usage of the minutes within a three month period must be at least 50% in the US or Verizon reserves the right to cancel the service.
